The history

Born in Pont-de-Vaux in 1814, Antoine Chintreuil established himself as a painter in Paris, inspired by the works of Corot. He captured nature’s essence through his landscapes, showcasing them at the Salon exhibitions. His stay in Igny between 1850 and 1855 marked a prolific period. Chintreuil’s brushstrokes were imbued with emotional depth, particularly evident in his masterpiece “Pluie et soleil” (Rain and Sun), where a tormented light illuminates the marshlands. This painting, now displayed at the Orsay Museum, exemplifies his mastery in capturing light’s nuances. Chintreuil excelled in painting the pastoral landscapes of his native Bresse, infused with a vibrant and emotive light. His influence on the Impressionists is undeniable, making him a significant precursor of this movement.
